A friend of mine got herself a new Xperia 10 and wants to encrypt the SD card. It seems this option is no longer available - previously there was a “Encrypt SD card” option in settings - but no more. Apparently it was also possible to use the SD card as “Adoptable storage” - but no more.

Is it at all possible to encrypt an SD card on Android (15) or is de-googling the only option?

Oh yea, it seems like Motorola also doesn’t have it the last time I checked. Samsung still has it. Not sure why, but I’m guessing it has to do with Pixel not having an SD card slot, so Google stopped developing those part of the code and its OEMs to keep those code maintained.

I’m curious, which OEMs/ROMs still have it?

that or they want to promote their cloud offering …

isn’t encrypting an SD card a very basic feature though?

      I don’t get it …

On what android version are you? I had no problems setting up adaptable storage on LineageOS 19 (Android 12).

Adaptable storage also encrypts the SD card btw

Maybe it has to do with how the card is setup. For example if the phone believes it’s a portable device versus something for internal storage it might not provide the option in case someone encrypts the card not realizing they will need decryption software on other devices they want to use it on.
