  • I dont think Putin would let him nuke Ukraine. Beyond issues with it being on their border, and their own military forces occupying part of the country, a missile launched from the US towards Ukraine is going to look a whole lot like one launched from the US towards Russia, at least at first, and the nature of nuclear conflict is such that you generally would launch your own missiles when you see your rival’s missiles coming, rather than waiting to see where they land. Trump seems to care what Putin wants, and nobody is going to want their main rival, even if their leader is currently one you have influence over, to be launching nuclear missiles in the direction of one’s country.

The EU is even less likely, since France is both one of its most prominent members and a nuclear power itself.

  • Ive ended up making one of these myself lol. When I came over to lemmy from reddit around the third party apps thing, I tried to create a community for the game Spore (a bit niche these days, but it had a small but active reddit community that was fun, and I hadnt really realized yet that the small size of lemmy would mean individual game communities wouldnt really be viable except for a handful with very large playerbases).

Ended up posting a few things I made in game myself, and I think I got one or two posts from other people, but nobody else really joined it and eventually I moved on to other games again (I tend to go through my library in cycles of a few months).

I may come back to it if I get back into that game someday, and I am still active on lemmy, so if someone started trying to use it as a space to spread hate thinking it abandoned, I am still around to remove it, so for the moment I dont think mine at least poses a problem per se, though I suppose if I ever tire of the platform as a whole I’ll need to either ask around if anyone else wants it or else look up how to close it/ask an instance admin to if that’s needed.

  • The dems have no coherent message and strategy because they are an attempt to unify basically everything that isn’t the far right under one banner. That means that different politicians under it, and different voters that vote for them, want fundamentally different things. Taking a firm, party-wide stance that satisfies the left wing of the party would risk driving off the segment that is just “conservatives that dont feel comfortable with how openly bigoted the republicans are”, and vice versa. But trying to please everyone by committing to nothing and running on good vibes eventually results in people getting frustrated with voting for a party that doesn’t advance what they want.

  • The whole “either you hate the Palestinians or you hate the Jews” narrative that pops up whenever Israel does something wrong is part of the problem. The government of Israel uses its demographics as something of a shield from criticism, by stating that it is the Jewish state, and thus that to accuse them of wrongdoing is to be antisemitic. But it is not so; not everyone who is Jewish agrees with or desires what Israel is doing, they cant, no matter how many they might bring on board, because it is an ethnic and religious identity that includes some, like children, who aren’t even able to understand and agree to it. The actions of Israel are not the actions of Jewish people as a whole, and they never will be, because ethnic groups simply do not work that way. If anyone is being antisemitic here, it is the Israeli state itself, for attempting to tie their very real atrocities to Jewish people in order to coerce people into ignoring them. Its like the rhetorical equivalent of a criminal taking a hostage in order to deter arrest.

  • To be fair, I’m not sure if “just arrest anyone convenient and frame them”, is entirely in the wealthy’s interest here. Making an example is one thing, sure, but if you do that and dont get the guy that actually did it, then you have a guy out there who has proven themselves willing to go out and assassinate CEOs, who may well decide to do it again. If you do have the means to catch that guy, then what motivation is there to not just send him through the court system rather than framing someone else? Less risk of a frame up being discovered and sparking even more resentment if you have at least some genuine evidence, after all.
