  • Like a hundred or so teenagers of whom a large part went to some regular school and had regular non-wizard friends would suddenly either completely cut off contact as if devoured by a cult or dead or the kids are assumed to just successfully lie about not being fucking magic.

It’s utterly ridiculous. Imagine if it was hidden from the Dursley’s somehow and that Harry spent summers there bullied by Dudley. That he would never snap and tell or do magic?

Or that people like Dudley would keep their mouth shut for their entire lives?

    Nah.

  • You kids have it so easy.

Now you can literally ask your phone “hey what is this song” and hum your earworm and Google just tells you the song. (Default function on at least Android Google Assistant for like years now)

Imagine getting a song stuck in your head on you way to work/school but it’s playing on the radio and you didn’t catch the host saying the name of the song.

And you don’t really even know what they we’re saying and can’t imitate the song to sing it to anyone to ask what it is without going all misheard lyrics. Which you might have to do.

Or just listen an hour longer and if it’s a hit they play it again. And then you can record it on a cassette to play it for yourself.

  • There’s lots of vegetables, my man.

How long was the pan on the hob before you splashed it with oil?

I’m not criticising you, I’m trying to learn though your mistake because I’ve always tried to dance around that fine border of oil being hot vs it being literally lit. And I’m just wondering how close to the edge I am.

My hob should have enough power to be at least comparable to yours, it draws like 400+ volts just like the stove of my sauna. So it’s not like using a 110v electric hob in the states.

  • Do you ever get that thing where you’re just really into a thing you’re discussing, and then another person says something incorrect, and because you’re aware of this tendency of people to confuse passion for ego, you try to suggest as softly as possible that it’s an understandable mistake to make (and then you have to try to get to the root of the issue which is like a few levels down in the deduction, sorry, abduction path), but they still get angry at you for having pointed it out, even when you did it just to further the actual discussion?

I don’t know, might be a niche thing. Might be I just am a dick. But I don’t know if dicks would consider if they’re dicks. But I might just be saying that because I’m a smart dick pretending to not be a dick. I don’t think I am, though, but maybe I’m lying to myself.

Ah, but “the clip” is prolly referring to basically the climax of the episode, if it’s the clip where the Doctor takes him to the Musée d’Orsay.

But you miss all the buildup of the episode, and personally I think Doctor Who is very good at it. They show Van Gogh’s desperation and loneliness in the episode. And then to have that sort of fantastical acceptance from the entire world.

There’s a lot of that sort of story in Doctor Who, I greatly recommend. As far as scifi goes, Dr Who is whimsical and emotional and doesn’t really care about tiny details of tech and lore as opposed to Star Trek which is like very methodical and logical and clinical.

In Doctor Who emotions are the hero in like at least half the stories. This wasn’t even one of them, just a random monster story basically.
