Those are services etc on the internet. Not the internet itself.
The internet is what you make it. I’ve never spent much time on overtly corporate media social or otherwise. Combined with largely avoiding the most politically toxic places both maga or ML.
Most of my time online is spent visiting places focused on retro Computing, Retro Gaming, music or some other hobbies. The internet hasn’t changed drastically in 30 years. Just the way average people use it.
The corporate sites will never respect your time or privacy. They’re just endless treadmills to keep you busy and engaged. We’ve always been able to hop off.
I think we would have been better off had it stuck around as well. But I also think that we’ve somewhat arrived at the best of all situations. Where access to Media is much more democratized. You don’t have to rely on a big wealthy owner Etc allowing your Viewpoint to be heard. The modern problem is AI generated fire hoses of disinformation. They can output so much more misinformation through seemingly so many more Outlets than an actual person can. So it’s going to rely on a lot more word of mouth and Trust. People finding good journalists and presenters like coffee Zilla for instance and sharing them with others to help build up trusted networks of Representatives.
I think a lot of people assume that had it stuck around it would have eventually been applied to cable. But cable was a big new thing at the end of the 1970s early 1980s. Specifically because it didn’t have a lot of the regulation and restrictions that broadcast did.
I think a lot of people would have also assumed that the ERA would have been ratified by now. Or that a woman’s right to abortion would have been enshrined in law by now. But that didn’t happen either. So it’s never good to assume.
And then the real rub, what actually constitutes a Viewpoint worthy of being heard. Yes the fairness Doctrine was supposed to give other viewpoints air time. And it did. But not all of them. Fox News in fact was really good with this formula. Early Fox News often tried to provide the appearance of that sort of balance. Toe-headed Sean Hannity did not have his own show for a long long time. Granted the show was his in all but name. But for a long time he was saddled with a limp wet noodle Democrat. Who was little more than a foil for Sean to stomp over. But Alan Combs did provide some token Democrat views and pushback.
The equal representation was only as good as the honesty and the sincerity of the people behind allowing it. Which was often quite dubious itself.
While removal of the fairness Doctrine was a horrible thing. It would not have impacted Fox News in the slightest. It may have had some impact on am talk radio, or Sinclair propaganda. Which would have been a good thing. But zero impact on OANN or similar ilk. Not even CNN or MSNBC or any of the others would have been affected either. It was strictly broadcast only.
That you cheerlead worst of the wealthy. And then disingenuously say that like it wipes away everything else you’ve done. People can clearly see you’re disingenuous.
You mentioned it because they were rightly calling out your obvious bias and misrepresentation. And that was tiniest smallest shred of anything you could push back on. No more no less. And to this point you have still not defended your possession in any way shape or form. Simply playing off imagined sexism and bigotry pretending to be the victim. Just like you’re pretending that Ukrainian isn’t.
Oh no I get that that’s why I said they’re experts at hiding their income. All those loopholes would ultimately make it less functional. It would still be more fair than paying the same dollar amount but you’re not wrong they will cheat every way possible in order to steal a few dollars more.
Well a flat % tax wouldn’t be too bad. But that’s never what they mean. They want trillionaires to pay the same dollar amount in taxes as someone in poverty. And even if we could get them to pay the same percentage of their income in taxes as someone in poverty. The wealthy are experts at hiding their income.
Though honestly thieves like the wealthy need to be taxed harder than anyone else as punishment for their theft.
This isn’t mentioned often enough. He only looked good next to Oz. He was always a shitty person who behaved shittily. The people that actually dealt with him in their local government know. He’s always been a bit of a dumb ass and a bully. Just one slightly more relatable to the average person than that loon Oz.
Not really. No more than in the past. The difference is the 24/7 firehose of propaganda and indoctrination. The solution is to step away from the firehouse. Focus on the things that actually impact you. Or that you can influence. If someone is telling you to be afraid of people that you don’t know, have never met, or ever had contact with. Ignore them and tune them out. It’s legitimately that simple.
We’d all like quick easy solutions. The moral quandary is how many innocent non consenting people will be sacrificed. And who decides who that will be.
If you could have a volunteer force of Mangiones. With the resources and logistics to repeat what he did. Pinpoint assassination. No small feat. You might get a temporary small concession.
But yeah, I don’t know any average person that’s opposed to them personally finding out. For all their fucking around.
I never implied that it did. Go ahead and make one. It will always do as much or more damage than it will ever do good. That’s the point. There’s bias in everything. Trusting someone else’s bias to accurately convey the bias of something else, isn’t making you more informed or a better consumer of media. Not in any meaningful way. Not in the way basic critical thinking skills can. It’s just a game of bias telephone. And if you know how the game telephone goes. It should give you an indication to its efficacy.
It’s not hard. There are some basic steps anyone can take to get started. Do not tolerate those who are intolerant of who someone is. Whether it’s ethnicity or sexuality. If accusations are being made against groups. Especially ones that you have very little experience or contact with. Put yourself in that situation. Think about how you would go about things. Because that’s more than likely how they would as well. And for everything else, especially things that are either hard science or factually based. Simply differ to the people who make it their life to study and understand those things. But never give their opinions outside of that field any weight.
Just those few basic things can illuminate a lot of bias and malintent. Leave you far more guarded and protected against misinformation and bias in the future. Which along with basic intellectual curiosity. Something most people have largely never valued. Will serve you far better than any app. Because the Insidious part about misinformation. Is that there’s often some amount of Truth to it. Whether it’s wrong because of malice or because of bias. Critical thinking and intellectual curiosity will always better serve you.
No. And there never should be. And here’s why. Bear with me for a moment but consider this. Part of the problem with this sort of thing is that people want their hands held. They want to be told what to think. Not to think critically for themselves. No matter how well intentioned. Such systems will always be sought to be abused. To manipulate people and their opinions. And at best they will always be subject to bias and blindness. The truly keep them from ever being universally useful.
Basic training and education in critical thinking skills will be far more to help people. Than relying on an app no matter how well intentioned to tell them how to think about something.
Even that is just a stop gap. Look at France today. Revolutions, long-term rarely ever worked out that well. How about iran, North korea, russia, china, even the United states?
The problem with revolutions is that ignorant people see them as a quick fix to everything that’s wrong. But without a fundamental change to society culture and human thinking in general. Things will sooner or later and go back to being brutally dictated by a few with undeserved wealth and influence. Fundamental changes that themselves cannot be brought about by revolution. Fundamental changes that do not need Revolution to be brought about. Fundamental changes that any Revolution is useless without.
Killing people is easy. Changing Minds is hard. But until we change Minds there will always be another must for Hitler eager to fill the void
Disgusting and egregious. And this is only what we know of. We can safely assume much worse has already happened and will continue to happen. I wonder how many similar cases are already unceremoniously shipped off to Guantanamo already.
Because our psychotic monkey brains have been groomed for Millennia and longer to worship power and wealth. You or I might feel that someone holding a position based on the merit. Should be because of their expertise and experience.
Your average psychotic monkey brain however only views power and wealth as the only metrics for merit. Fundamentally ignoring and disregarding the fact that no one achieves those levels of wealth and power without being supremely disqualified for leadership and adoration. That sort of wealth is only generated from immoral unscrupulous exploitative systems. Even for example Taylor swift. You may like her. Think she does better than a lot of celebrities. And she may. But all that wealth that she has. Whether or not she did it herself was amassed through exploitation and manipulation.
That said. Unlike most others. I think Swift is aware of just how unqualified she is as influential and looked to as she is. Trying to do her best in moderating her influence. Trying not to cause more damage. But for everyone like her there are tens if not thousands of others who would gladly exploit anyone looking up to them for more wealth and power.
Lol
I’m assuming your comment was sarcastic. Or maybe it was facetious. If we are lucky perhaps even fescastic. Because and that is absolutely 100% on the nose what they are doing. And has been known for a long time to anyone paying attention. I think they even admitted to it.
It’s unprecedented in us history. But in world history it’s following a particular game plan from the last century 100%.
