One thing that happened recently that really showcases the difference between Linux and Windows is the glibc update that broke several popular video games. These games were specifically built to run on Linux. Ironically, games built to run only on Windows could still be ran on Linux just fine. That’s because those games are run through a compatibility layer that translates the Windows instructions into their corresponding Linux instructions. The games built for Linux use Linux instructions directly, so they don’t need a compatibility layer.
The update to glibc changed how some Linux instructions worked and so any program using the old instructions needed to update to the new ones. Lots of Linux programs are actively maintained or at least open source, so making the change isn’t a big deal. Video games tend not to be open source or actively maintained after they’re released, so some of these broken games will be broken forever. When that was reported to the maintainers of glibc, they responded that they don’t care if they break unmaintained, closed source software. It is the user’s fault for choosing to use such software.
To me, that is the biggest difference between Windows and Linux. If someone creates a program for Windows, that program will likely still work 10 years from now. If someone creates a program for Linux, it could break next week, and the people who broke it won’t care. It’s a bit embarrassing that programs created for Windows work on Linux more reliably than programs created specifically for Linux.
My understanding of Korean eating culture is that it’s very much a social experience and food is always seen as something shared amongst everyone present. Wanting your own plate or eating by yourself would be seen as odd. I don’t think I could ever get used to that!
At work, I purposely take my lunch at an odd time so that I can eat by myself. I’ve found that people want to make small talk if I eat with everyone else. I just want to eat! It’s lunch time not talk time!

Imagine WW3 really kicks off, maybe your country gets Nuked
“omg can I still play Elden Ring??” would be my first thought for sure, for I am a Gamer.
Referring to the death of a pigeon as “packet loss” feels like some weird form of low-tech cyberpunk.
Much of the economy only works because people believe in it. The UK had an economic crisis in 2022 when Liz Truss, Prime Minister for 50 days, passed a budget so terrible it tanked their stock market.
The budget included enormous tax cuts for the highest tax brackets, resulting in a £60 billion budget deficit, all while there was a cost of living crisis for the UK’s poorest. UK stocks plummeted so much over the thought that the Prime Minster had no idea how to manage the economy that it caused “safe” investments, like retirement funds, to start failing. The UK central bank stepped in and said they’d print money in order to keep safe investments liquid which likely stopped the UK from experiencing a great depression. Liz Truss resigned because of the fallout.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Trump hinting that the government might not honour their debts could collapse the economy.
Just let the freaking creatives do their job and stop having some committee decide for them.
Reminds me of a joke I heard about Concord.

You ever try to put together a GUI? I absolutely get why they look like crap! Although I have been having fun playing around with egui.
Can’t recommend it enough! I’ve tried Linux distros in the past but always found that there were hardware issues or certain programs didn’t work. Not to mention I essentially had to give up gaming. Linux was cool but I just couldn’t use it as my daily driver.
I switched to Pop!_OS last month and I’ve been blown away. The install was simple and straightforward and the only hardware that required special config was my gaming mouse that needed “libratbag” and “piper” to remap the extra buttons and adjust the RGB.
Other than that, all the programs I normally use like Discord, Dropbox, Steam, and every game I’ve tested so far work flawlessly. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything or had to give up something like I did before. I actually feel like I’ve upgraded since I’m loving the auto tiling window manager and multiple desktops that Pop!_OS has as options.
You’re copying the idea of brilliant entrepreneur Chabuddy G.
Fun fact: “petit ami / petite amie” means “boyfriend / girlfriend”
Currently it’s down to half an A press.
Content creators live to serve the algorithms of their respective platforms and will do anything to be promoted by it. It’s thought that images with anything “offensive” in it will be ignored by the algorithm so content creators have started censoring themselves just in case. I’m not sure if there’s any hard evidence, but it’s not totally unfounded. YouTube announced they scan the audio of content and determine what level of monetization it’s allowed to have based on the severity of cursing in it.
American alcohol is on the list of immediate tarrifs as well as orange juice, peanut butter, clothing, and cosmetics. There will be further tarrifs on dairy, beef, poultry, fruits and vegetables, steel, aluminum, cars, trucks, busses, and boats after a 21 day delay to give time for Canadian companies to adjust supply chains.
Tarrifs are simple, easy, and can be implemented immediately by the Prime Minister alone. All the other things listed in that comment are fine ideas, but require parliment pass laws, which is going to take time since we’re approaching an election. I don’t think it’s appropriate to wait months before even starting the debate in parliment about what we should do.
There’s also no guarantee any of those ideas would even pass into law. I doubt many politicians are keen on tearing up patent and copyright protection so Canadian companies can rip off American innovations.
It’s arguable, sure, but unnecessary. They have to prove beyond a doubt that his intentions were to threaten the government into making political changes. They could have just charged him with murder where they’d only need to prove he wanted to kill the guy. Both crimes would lead to life in prison, so why go for the one more difficult to prove? Ironically, I think it’s because the government wants to threaten the public.
