Oh cool! Let me just spend three weeks crawling through wiki articles, setting flags in the config files, and patching out 15 different issues with various drivers then installing 20 dependencies compiling them all from source.

Hyperbole, but yeah no thanks I’ll take the L on some optimization and 2gb of storage space and some wierd file system locations for files to load a flatpak if old stable doesn’t cut it. you might want to be careful recommending gentoo to people they might not know better. Most Linux nerds don’t want to open that can of worms, but good for you if it works.

I use gimp for pixel art for game textures and to make memes. It has tons of features that nobody knows about becuase they’re fucked by horrendous UI. But theres never been anything I needed to to but couldnt after looking up a tutorial on the internet. Valid points against gimp but lets not pretend people used to photoshop arent also kind of stuck in their old workflow habits and unwilling to relearn new software UI.

Theres photogimp but it hasn’t been worked on in a while.

Also also, most people who use gimp on linux probably did so on a stable distro like Mint installing with default package manager. This means their experience with gimp is from a terribly old outdated version. Flatpaks have some issues but being able to easily install the most current version of software like gimp or kdenlive is night and day difference.

  • Three is better than none. as long as the community exist and has some kind of activity even one post a month with three comments, you are doing your part to create a viable home for those who share your niche interest. In three months you might get up to 6 people, in 9 months 10, one year later 15. Its difficult going from passive consumer to one of the few active posters but you truly are adding value to the space just by trying.

Lemmy users like to present lemmy vs reddit usage as all or nothing, its not. Realistically you still use reddit for the niche communities that arent getting much interaction here. I do for locallama and dynavap. But ideally you cross post to the lemmy communities to add content here too so that those like you have a better chance to find a home.

  • You can’t do anything because these excuses are window dressing and not the core of the issue. The core of the issue is that 99% of people are incredibly unwilling to change their habits or spend five minutes to wrap their heads around how things work. If the question of which server to join is too much, this kind of space isn’t for you.

No, having a full time job or a family is not an excuse to not learn how computers or the internet or networks in general work. You’ve had a lifetime to learn and are willfully ignorant. If you just give up and run away the moment you have to apply two braincells to understand a new concept, your cognition is fucked.

Im personally fine with basic competence and tech literacy to be a natural gate keeping the unwashed morons out. Lemmy is growing at a fine pace without catering to the lowest common denominators.

  • I get its a bit of self deprecating humor but in seriousness it shows the exact opposite IMO. Going with the flow would be continuing to consume reddit slop no matter how awful the website gets, no matter how much content is baked by a bot, no matter how many more ads they show you just to comment or post.

“Lol I know its getting shittier but im addicted and unwilling to change my habits or show some backbone. Im sorry for even considering a 12 hour protest, Please daddy just let me continue posting I promise ill be good little content monkey and keep your shareholder numbers up this quarter. I don’t miss my old phone app for reddit at all…”

wipes away a single suppressed tear for the death of boost/sync/whatever and their own lost dignity when spez isn’t looking

Seriously good on you for being a trendsetter with a basic shred of self respect who knows when to tap out of a bad/abusive situation, Echofox. I wonder just how much more the water needs to be boiled before even the joke characature above gets tired of reddits BS. Maybe never.

  • Its generic slop by anime standards. Like yeah anime is meant for teenagers and young adults so you can’t be too critical over fanservice or flat YA novel Gary sue tier character writing or forgetting to write an actually compelling reason for the villain doing the bad thing at the start by the time the story wraps up. But you can at least try you know?

Anime in general is not meant to be high art but SAO goes the extra mile to be uninteresting bland slop that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Young nerdy teenage boys dont care because all they want is the hot anime girl harem and flashy epic gamer op superpower eye candy sakuga battles but the older you get the more apparent the poor writing gets.

The isekai genre has done a lot better over the decade since SAO initially released things like rezero or even Overlord blow it out of the water in terms of actually interesting plot and suspense. The only reason SAO is still popular is the high quality porn.

Oof bad guess. my daily driver is a used t460 made in 2015 running Mint. I said that used librebooted thinkpads are a great option to inexpensive preinstalled Linux machines. Are you sure you replied to the right person? Or are your reading comprehension skills fucked? Either way better luck next assumption

Except all those Linux specific privacy/modularbility orientated PCs are expensive as hell with base models starting close to 1k last I checked. They’re aimed at the demographic of cushy tech nerds making bank tapping at a keyboard who care about opsec or right to repair and can comfortably afford dropping 1k on a new laptop without thinking twice about if that money has better uses.

I and many others who don’t live in economic lah-lah land will NEVER be able to justify 1k spent on a laptop just because it has physical kill switches or modular parts and preloaded with a good Linux distro. These companies need to touch grass and come down a couple hundred dollars to the 400-500$ range then we can talk. Until that day comes, the guy selling librebooted thinkpads on eBay running popos or mint is the better option for those who live with the reality of not having a lot of money.

  • Maybe Instead of trying to memorize answers to exam questions, take some time to understand what is being presented to you. Examine, digest, and internalize the knowledge so it can be distilled into real understanding of the fundimental abstract concepts being conveyed.

Its like the difference between skimming through a paragraph to track down one piece of information vs being invested in reading through the chapter in totality to appreciate the plot of a good story. One might get you a passing grade on this weeks exam in a pinch and let you get back to partying, the other let’s the core of the knowledge live in you forever or atleast long after school is over and your neurons start weakening with age.

Let the ideas and concepts roll around in your mind like a fine wine tasting. Examine them, play with them, see how they line up with your pre-existing understandings of smilar concepts and reality in general. Make up some toy model example scenarios, visualize with your minds eye, see if its similar to a related concept you’re already familiar with. Think about the concepts and the abstractions and how they logically lead to exam solutions.

Then when you’re tired of thinking and visualizing to the point your brain actually aches from the workout, rest. Play a game, watch some entertainment, have fun, get a good sleep and let your subconscious internalize all that knowledge. Allow your neurons to rearrange themselves to better model new patterns of information.

  • You always have the option of partitioning some free space on your hard drive and dual boot windows along side Linux Mint until you’re 100% confident in erasing windows from the drive. When I first got started with it years ago I had similar fears that something would go wrong with the process or there would be driver issues or I wouldn’t be able to start my favorite software. So I dual booted windows on my laptop for about a year until I realized I hadnt needed to use windows at all.

  • People are more genuinely interested in actually contributing to a conversation here and likely to read through your stuff/reply. I feel more seen.

Reddit is a generic corporate algoritm flavored slop with LLMs with an agenda talking to human morons somehow dumber and less aware than the LLMs. Lemmy is at least mostly human but has a personality archetype bias that takes getting used to. Even on niche communities here theres a high likelyhood you’re talking to someone whos either a left leaning political activist, is really into alternative gender identity politics, knows a lot about information technology/STEM, has some serious kinky fetishes, is neurodivergent, or a mix of the above.

So you have the conversational pitfalls that come from talking to tech nerds, liberal arts students, the loud and proud members of lgbqt+, tankies, and all the in between relatively outcast groups that didn’t fit well on reddit in the first place. Every 1/10 post on all is going to be about how fucked the climate change is, lgbqt rights, femboys, trump/elon/conservative republicans doing something stupid or evil or facist, a really unfunny ‘meme’ thats really about spreading some message or showcasing how victimized X minority group is, why linux is good and windows/microsoft bad, some half baked plan by young political activist who think they can overthrow a global corporatocracy with some clever cordinated consumer protesting. At least the content is overall consistent.

As someone who doesn’t really identify with most of these im left feeling lemmy isn’t for me sometimes but its a decent enough social outlet that I can tune out the stuff I don’t care for while being involved with the niche communities im actually here to be part of.
