  • At the same time it’s the map’s job to describe the world. Even for something like nation states where there’s an official name, the map uses the common name. Our maps say France, not French Republic.

Changing the displayed name for a body of water shared by several nations doesn’t make much sense, especially when the common name has yet to follow.

At least that’s from the perspective of one of the goals the map ostensibly wants to serve.

  • Go to a local music shop and look for musician’s earplugs with a rated dB reduction. At least -8dB, but a bigger reduction won’t make your experience worse, it’ll just make things even quieter.

I have some from a major guitar manufacturer that I’ve been using at the infrequent shows I go to for a decade. They were $10 then, and it looks like that’s still true. I clean after using, but I wasn’t really expecting to get this many shows out of them.

They don’t muffle sounds, it just sounds quieter. Without earplugs I need to stand on the other side of the room/field to be comfortable. I’ll still leave with ear pain and feeling exhausted. With earplugs I’m comfortable right in front of the speaker stack, and leave feeling exhilarated.

They’ve been a huge upgrade in my enjoyment of shows and I’m very grateful to my friend for dragging me to the shop and making me buy them.

  • Not OP, but most of it.

Tutorials I might need to go a bit slower, remembering broad strokes isn’t enough, and detailed steps in order is probably too much, but that would be true at 1x speed as well.

For videos generally I watch almost everything at 2x or higher. Headphones help, it would be much harder if there were any competing audio stimulus. If I’m forced to go at 1x I retain almost nothing.

  • Shortening the longer leg is much less invasive and probably preferred, but the discrepancy has to be caught very early. You need years of measurements to predict exactly how long each leg will be and when. If you have those, there’s a pretty small window when the long leg is exactly the right length to tell it to stop growing.

  • America’s test kitchen has done that, although I can’t find one that addresses all the bits of misinformation.

This one is pretty ok, but doesn’t address all things, and doesn’t specifically call out the myths: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUComSZbZ7o

Notably missing is tomatoes/highly acidic foods. IIRC, it’s fine if the duration is short (about 15 minutes). Shakshuka and quick tomato sauces should be fine, but don’t make Grandma’s all-day tomato sauce. Regardless, for these contexts I’d still grab stainless if that’s an option, but mostly for ease of use/cleaning

  • It may depend quite a bit on the pill. As an adult I can easily dry swallow things like ibuprofen. But I’m not sure about something like oral steroids.

I was prescribed them as a kid due to a particularly bad poison ivy reaction. I couldn’t swallow pills at the time, so after running through all the tricks to teach someone, we ended up grinding them up and sticking them in ice cream. It was something like 15 years before I could eat cookies and cream again without tasting steroids. Grinding them definitely exacerbated the problem, but I’m not sure how I’d fare if prescribed the same pills again.
