Yeah, I wish there was a less condescending way to advocate for changing yourself if you can’t change the world (not that I’m saying you’re condescending, I’m saying it’s hard to talk to people about it without sounding like “pull yourself up by the bootstraps”), but I’ve been really reevaluating this stuff in the last few months and it’s helping me a lot. I’m buying less that I don’t need and donating that money to causes. I’m trying to focus on what I can do in my world, while still paying attention to the big world, and it’s helping me keep a balance. I’m focusing on making myself a better me so I can fight instead of wallowing in helplessness (which I definitely did do for a while).

And stop saying sigh, Amazon and Bezos suck, but I simply cannot live without throwing my money at them. I tend to hate to be judgy about it, but I think the time has come to pass judgement, for people to put up or shut up. Yes, all corporations are bad. That means we should all be consuming less. But some corporations are definitely worse than others, and every single person who voluntarily gives them money is complicit. They have the power because we give it to them.

One of my crabby old person pet peeves is kids these days ending statements with question marks? I get that they’re afraid of periods and they don’t want to look like my generation using ellipses constantly (which I am glad about), but half the time I cannot tell if someone is asking a question or making a statement and randomly using a question mark, and it can very much change the meaning of their comment. We need something more open-ended for these people.

I’ve been a vegetarian for a hundred years, but I’ve finally decided to go vegan and I’m kind of excited about it. I’m growing a garden from seeds I started inside, and my seeds have almost all sprouted.

When my dog hears dogs barking on TV I always wonder what they’re saying. The scene may involve the dog being aggressive or scared, but maybe they’re actually yelling about the treats their trainer is bribing them with off camera

I work in the public sector (not at the federal level) and it’s great, but uhhhh. I’m sure we’ll be fine for a while where I am, but I’m not as enthusiastically pushing it as I was. But goddamn is it nice not working to make some asshole rich.

Interesting, I’ve stopped listening to more than one podcast where the premise is “I learned about this thing and I’m telling you about it” when the podcasters got something wrong, got called out on it, and said “I’m not an expert, you shouldn’t be talking me seriously.” I’ve come to accept that podcasts are for entertainment only, and even if you think they seem well-researched, assume nothing you hear is true.

I think it’s really important to consume social media/whatever this and Reddit are conscientiously. Be aware you’re in an echo chamber and step outside from to time. Sometimes it’s just annoying (I was really into the show Mr Robot, and one of my many Reddit rage-quits was just being sick of seeing any speculation about where the show was going that was anything but the accepted popular opinion being downvoted) and sometimes just misleading (we all thought Trump couldn’t win), but there are so many ways it sneaks into your consciousness. For me, the tribalist culture wars became really glaring. We hate everyone who drives a car. We hate anyone who has a grass lawn. You can’t advocate for something there without making it about hating everyone else. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I firmly believe a lot of that is by design. I’m sure it will bleed over here eventually if there is a large exodus, but I hope there are counter measures.
