  • I’m a sucker for crafting and breeding systems that allow you to customise equipment and/or characters. But it’s really hard to find good implementations of the idea, most have some obvious flaw:

    • Pokémon (breeding) - in early games RNG plays too much of a role, so it’s hard to get what you want. Late games don’t fix this, instead they allow you to skip the process altogether (see: hyper training).
    • Niche - the breeding part of the game is actually really good, a shame that the rest of the game is a slop. For example gathering food gets a PITA once you got too many nichelings, and yet you want them to support your breeding pairs.
    • RimWorld (Biotech; germline genes) - arbitrary restrictions that must be lifted through the usage of mods.
    • RimWorld (crafting) - now we’re talking. If you pay close attention to which materials you’re using for which tasks, it pays off in the long run. There’s some luck involved, but you can get perfect (legendary) stuff fairly often if you know what you’re doing.
    • Leaf Blower Revolution (leaf crafting) - the game encourages you to craft a lot of leaves and salvage most of them. That’s fine, it’s easy to get cheese anyway. The problem is the sheer amount of beer that you need to get the properties that you want in each leaf.
    • Monster Breeder (old Flash game) - the game is a bugfest, and the lack of any sorting system makes you have a hard time even knowing which monster you should be breeding with which.
    • Minecraft (tools and weapons) - vanilla has a really dumb system that doesn’t fit well in a game that encourages hoarding piles of materials into chests. The mod Tinkers’ Construct fixes this, and makes the system next to ideal.

    Plus a lot more that I didn’t mention. Sorry for the wall of text.



  • The problem is that defending against a copyright troll in the court is an expensive headache, and the copyright troll has a whole army of lawyers to prove for sure that the Moon is made of green cheese. As such, even if the target knows that it’s a bogus claim, they still comply with the troll to avoid the court.

    Sending a takedown notice under DMCA that’s knowingly false is perjury, which would presumably come up at the court hearing.

    In theory, yes. In practice, good luck proving that the copyright troll knew it and acted maliciously.


  • [Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, nor from any country following Saxon tribal law like USA. Take what I say with a grain of salt.]

    As far as I know, in theory the victim of the bogus DMCA could sue the copyright troll for damages, including attorney fees and all that stuff. In practice, it would be the same as nothing, megacorp who hired the copyright troll would make sure that the victim knows its place.


  • As of now the site is already back.

    The core of the problem is that there’s absolutely nothing effectively preventing companies from abusing IP claims to harass whoever they want.

    At least you’d expect claims to be automatically dropped when coming from an assumptive/disingenuous party. Something like “you issued 100 wrong claims so we won’t listen to your 101st one, sod off”. But nah.

    As such, “your violating muh inrelactual properry, remove you’re conrent now!!!” has zero cost, and a thousand benefits. Of course they’d abuse it.

    The role of AI in this situation is simply to provide those companies a tool to issue more and faster claims, at the expense of an already low accuracy.


  • It got to be Goat Simulator for sure:

    • Top notch graphics.
    • Full of features, even some not intended by the developers.
    • You can hurt and get hurt, so it’s BDSM-friendly.
    • Open sandbox.
    • It’s more recognisable than Tetris. Tetris is easy to confuse with some Tetris knock-off, Goat Simulator is instantly “yup, this is Goat Simulator”.
    • It’s deeper in lore and philosophy than Chrono Trigger.
    • Zelda’s worldbuilding pales in comparison with Goat Simulator’s.
    • Requires more strategy than Diablo and FFA combined.
    • You play it as a goat dammit. Everything else is just fluff.

  • If by “a little toxicity” you mean a little bit of aggressiveness, sarcasm, etc., I agree with you. It depends a lot on the community though - in some, allowing it will be counter-productive.

    If however you mean harassment and hate speech, as the author of the text, I strongly disagree. If the mod doesn’t curb down those things, they might not be “lording” over the discourse, but other users are - because

    • users shut each other up through harassment
    • hate speech silences whole groups, as they leave the community

    Another detail is that you don’t need to control the discourse to curb down harassment, since it’s only behavioural and not discursive in nature.

    So IMO when it comes to those two things the problem is not overzealous mods, but dumb ones not doing due diligence, who are a bit too eager to falsely accuse their own users to be voicing hate speech or harassing each other when it is not the case.
