Altice failed to terminate repeat infringers whose IP addresses were flagged in these copyright notices, the lawsuit said.
So the record label thinks it should have the power to cut off people’s internet service, upon which most people depend for at least some basic essentials of living, by simply accusing them of copyright infringement.
I hope the record label is severely punished for this abuse of the (publicly funded) justice system.
I’m going as far back as the 1400s, and your 1810 usage doesn’t match any common meaning of “snuff out”, so I don’t think it really applies here. But thanks for the interesting etymological diversion. :)
In any case, polygraphs still cannot put an end to leaks, so I stand by my original interpretation.
I see your line of thinking, but let’s also remember that polygraphs wouldn’t end leaks even if they really were lie detectors. The most they could do in that fictional scenario would be to reveal the leaks; to sniff them out. To snuff them out would require some additional, separate action.
Also snuff out applies to candles only because the snuff is literally part of a candle’s wick. The phrase is not being used literally here, which leaves us with the common non-literal meaning: to murder.
I still think the most charitable interpretation is that author confused it with sniff out, and failed to consider the grisly meaning of what they wrote.
It also seems that the headline currently on the article is different and switches out
Both are present in the article; they don’t switch out. One is the title (as you can see in the title bar of a desktop web browser) and the other is the top-level heading of the text.
Looks like Lemmy picked up the former, which makes sense considering the document structure. BBC probably should have used the same phrase in both places.
Yes, I’m aware of that justification. I like the idea in principle, but it doesn’t hold water in this game, because the mechanics they used to simulate ultra-realism are not realistic at all. Picking up a weapon in real life doesn’t impose a state of bodily malfunction where you have about as much control of yourself as a blind drunk standing on one stilt. I’ve used swords and bows, and trained in a fair number of other physical skills. Even my very first time, there was never a point where I suddenly found my arms or legs failing to work. The most forgiving way I can describe this implementation would be to call it a ham-fisted attempt.
Clearly, though, there’s an audience for it
It seems so. If some people enjoy slogging through those mechanics, then I’m happy for them. I have better things to do with my time.
I loved the environments in RDR2, but holy hell, the missions’ persistent denial of player agency drove me up a tree. Railroading is annoying in the best of cases. I could tolerate it in The Last of Us, which limited the places I could go but offered a wonderfully engaging story in those places and never dropped a 10-ton FAIL anvil on my head for trying something creative. In an open world game (a genre that I like because I’m encouraged to find creative solutions) I find it unforgivable.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance drove me away for similar reasons. I like games where the challenge comes from learning how to work with available tools and moves, developing my skill with them, and figuring out how to use them most effectively. Making progress that way is satisfying. KC:D chose the polar opposite of that, interfering with my ability to control my character until I slogged through seemingly endless time sinks thinly disguised as “training” sessions. This mechanic had nothing to do with developing my skill as a player, but instead just arbitrarily denied me agency. I hated it, and since the reports I’ve read suggest that the sequel does the same, I won’t be buying it or anything else from those game designers.
I guess my point is just to let you know that you’re not alone. :)
How?
To be clear, PuTTY is a common tool for accessing networked computers. There’s nothing wrong with the tool itself. The problem here is the access being granted (via the tool) to sensitive data that should not be accessible by these people.

FINAL UPDATE as of January 31st 5:35PM EST:
Thank you to everyone who shared content. The content being submitted now from what I’m seeing is duplicates of older content. I will thus no longer be updating this archive. The MEGA will remain untouched, so use that as you please, but that will likely die one day as there is a bandwidth/transfer limit. I will be uploading the content to Internet Archive, as well as other sources, but until then the torrent magnet that I will be seeding for a little while is listed below - my bandwidth isn’t the best so please do seed if you can:
Hash (for verification of authenticity etc):
c8fc9979cc35f7062cd8715aaaff4da475d2fadc
Size:
1,013.12GiB
Archiving videos before potential removal from various websites…
Send or comment links of videos you need downloaded. Currently going through POV livestreams/replays.
NOTE: livestreams/POV are of the utmost importance. AKA Twitch/dlive/Facebook Live, etc. If you find any of these POV angles, please tag me directly in your comment, or PM me. These generally get taken down VERY fast by the livestream website.
UPDATE:
Thank you to everyone who shared links (and continue to do so). I am noticing that a lot of the content is now duplicates, or variations (crops, lower quality, etc) of the same content. So I have put all the content I have on MEGA. If I have replied to your comment then the content for sure is in this torrent.
MEGA: https://mega.nz/folder/30MlkQib#RDOaGzmtFEHkxSYBaJSzVA (this is the prefered way of downloading)
(This is sitting in at ~350GB as of Jan 10 3:00 PM EST. Still adding content)
UPDATE 2: Link should be working - MEGA contacted me and reinstated the account (and gave premium so I could upload more). I will be uploading more content that I find to the mega account. Still going through the comments, and the 900+ messages I have. Keep posting comments and I will upload them to the MEGA folder.
UPDATE 3: “Bellingcat” has created a really efficient way to submit media via a Google Spreadsheet. It’s not connected to my archive, but I hope to have a merged final copy in the end.
UPDATE 4:
IF YOU WANT TO UPLOAD A FILE DIRECTLY TO ME: https://mega.nz/megadrop/fgve0WRa880 (no account registration needed)
BACKUPS:
Recommended backup:
Other backups based on the original MEGA from Jan 06 6:30PM - some might’ve updated, but no idea if/when; check each link, it should say. Or you can message the user:

Dear House Democrats,
Fascism is currently destroying the US system of government that you like to call democracy.
Given the influence on the world held by the US, this is a major threat not only to the people you were trusted to represent, but to practically everyone.
If it succeeds in taking over the United States, it will be in no small part your fault.
Kindly do you fucking jobs.
Now.
Before it’s too late.
Good luck. You’ll find that your farmed accounts can’t do much of anything, and will be quickly and automatically deleted.
What will be effective depends on the nature of the site and that of the bots causing trouble. For example, a forum can limit posting privileges until an account builds a reputation, a paid goods/services site can restrict access until a purchase is made, a web service can use revocable credentials, and a data download site can use rate limits. (That last one is actually useful in a variety of situations, and can be done at the network level instead of or in addition to the application level.)
There is no silver bullet, but there are lots of small measures that can be very effective when applied thoughtfully, without turning a site into a frustrating-to-use surveillance tool for Google at the expense of the humans who want to or have to use it.
Even a small, locally hosted, activate-only-once, simple image or text-based CAPTCHA would be preferable to the ones operated by third parties.
They run, but I wouldn’t say very well. A few counterexamples off the top of my head:
You might not notice the problems (or not as often) if using Proton. That’s because Proton includes a load of Wine patches for stuff like this.
It would be nice if Blizzard tested on Wine and worked with the maintainers to ensure things stayed smooth.
