I feel like a good guide to “good policies the next democratic presidential candidate should promote” should be the opposite of the list of things Trump did in his first month.
Its going to be a 60 year-old rich democrat from New England promising to “work across the aisle” and “promote small businesses with tax cuts and less regulation”, but hopefully some of this stuff will be undone.
Yes, conditions in 2016 were markedly different. Biden was the VP of a highly successful president. Hillary had been demonized by the right for 2 decades and by the left for 1 decade. By the forward progression of time, Biden was weaker in 2024 than he was in 2020. Conversely, he would have been a stronger candidate in 2016.
Listen, every other “X could have beat Trump” is a hypothetical. Trump has only ever been beaten once, and I don’t want to carry on a factual debate with a Qanon MAGA hat that doesn’t believe in logic, just “feels”, so good night.
Biden won against Trump, unless you are part of the MAGA cult that believes he lost in 2020.

Well, yes, but it was a very weak case - but people were so sick of Bush that that was enough.

Trump could say: “What if there was one day where there was no laws and people could just do anything, like the purge…” and… oh, he did say that during his first term. And democracy still survived. Saying things just make people loose respect for America. It is why Obama got the Nobel peace prize. Cause he stopped saying the shit that Bush was saying.
What people should be worried about is actions and inactions. It takes competency to do things. The more fascist a thing Trump wants to do, the more competent people leave and the less likely it is to be done. The true problem is it takes no level of competency to not do a thing.
So Trump’s end game is “Ask not what your country can do for you … because it can no longer do that.”
So, my understanding was prior to 1984 if a law was unclear, the courts would get involved and clarify. However, sometimes the courts wanted something that the writers of the law didn’t want, and that thing was different from the current congress, which in of itself different from what the president wanted, which even could be different from what the independent executive branch department heads wanted.
This all came to a head with Chevron. In Chevron, anything unclear in a congressional law that applied to a executive branch’s mission was left up to the head of that department which in a way was controlled by who the president nominated. In that way, if congress left something vague that meant the courts, congress, and the president all agreed that the head of the particular department in the executive branch got to decide it.
This peace lasted up until Loper in the end of 2024 under Biden. In it, the Supreme court said basically “If something is unclear, it is the courts and not the executive branch” that got to interpret the law. Not wanting to overturn 40 years of regulation, the courts said “anything made under Chevron is still good, but that stops now”, most likely since they thought Biden was going to win again and they wanted to take away his power.
Now this EO is saying “No, lol, Loper doesn’t mater. No one but the president himself (and DOGE) can interpret the law.” At least both Loper and Trump agree that THE REGULATORS can’t make new regulations. And because SCOTUS didn’t really want that job, and Trump doesn’t want to do anything, don’t expect any new regulations for the next 4 years.

So, just fly a Rainbow confederate flag. If they try to tell you to take it down, just say “it is my heritage”.
Sane Republicans fleeing from MAGA into the Democratic party want to reform the Democratic party as what the Republican party was before Trump.

Last time, we held back the Rottweiler from mauling the toddler. The wife got rid of it for a while, but then brought it back. It seems like the only way we can convince the wife that it is bad is to have it maul the toddler and have the police take it away to be destroyed. But we can’t just take it out for a walk and let it loose, it has to chew through the back fence and get at a toddler, otherwise we will be held accountable for the Rottweiler’s destruction. And of course, we don’t want any toddler to be hurt. What to do?
