Was having some nice discussions in the news instance regarding a post about the Columbian Presidents comments on cocaine, but the thread got nuked within the last hour.
I normally would move on, but this has begun to happen with more and more frequency. Not really interested in participating in anything that will just get removed based on some rando’s personal feelings towards a topic.
More often I see OPs deleting their own posts which is frustrating. I almost never see mod action at the thread level.
I don’t see any threads recently nuked in News, and no recent modlog entries for you specifically (except an old one from 6 months ago where you called someone a pedo, and nope, I’m not digging up a slapfight thread that starts/ends there). You might also want to clarify which “news” community; I was only looking at the modlog within the last hour as described in the post here.
The post I think you’re talking about, “Cocaine ‘no worse than whiskey,’ would be ‘sold like wine’ if legalized worldwide, Colombia’s president says” was removed because it was old news (rule 5: Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days). That’s a long-established community rule, and it was properly enforced.
The only comment I see removed in c/News in the last hour isn’t from that post or by you, and was removed for “What the fuck?”. Considering the comment in question is:
NSFL
She was enjoying the dead babies a bit too much
…I think the mod made the right call.
Edit: Put quoted removed comment into spoiler tag with NSFL warning.
The post you referenced as being removed for being old news is the one.
I understand the reason for the rule, but people were engaging with the content and now I’m left with blue balls so to speak.
Can you guys not make it so that submissions need to be mod approved before they show up in people’s feeds?
I don’t know if this is just Lemmy behavior or the decision of the specific admin/moderator, but I do wish that posts that get removed for irrelevance or getting off topic or whatnot would just get “locked” with voting/comments disabled, rather than purged. I hate participating in what seems like a good conversation only for the content to get irretrievably nuked just because it has a bad title or is considered off topic.

Here lately, that’s less because of posts getting removed by mods and more because some tinfoil-hat jerkoff(s) keep spinning up disposable accounts, making a post, and deleting the account/content shortly afterward. It’s to the point I won’t even bother responding to someone unless their account is at least a week old, and even then, I’m wary.
If your views are not compatible with the moderator or community’s views and they keep getting removed, you are free to go and find a different instance.
Nobody’s getting paid to work here, so the only people that do the work are the people who volunteer their time, and chances are if they’re constantly exposed to the same stupid shit over and over again, they’re gonna get grouchy, they’re gonna get grumpy, and they’re gonna just start blanket banning anything that even slightly aggravates them.
You can say it’s power-tripping, and you can protest it when it’s unequally applied to you. That’s fair, But you just have to live with it because this is not a business, this is not a customer service oriented situation, this is a “make the community as comfortable as possible for as many people as possible while maintaining your sanity” position for the mods.
I am not a moderator. I would not do moderation tasks because I see how stressful it is. I am also not apologizing on their behalf or trying to sugarcoat the situation.
It sucks for you, getting your posts removed. It sucks for a lot of people not getting to interact with those posts, but it’s a take what you can get sort of thing.
The good thing is, if you absolutely do not want your post to be removed, you are perfectly welcome to spin up your own lemmy instance and federate it and then share your post with the entire fediverse without any sort of moderation whatsoever.
Even with that though, the other instances of the Fediverse can defederate with you if they find your whole thing to just cause more headache and hassle than it’s worth to them.
Sounds like I should just use Bluesky exclusively then.
I can’t speak on behalf the other moderators, but what I can say is that personally I have a pretty high bar for actually deleting stuff.
If a post or comment is clearly in breach of rules AND (offensive OR spam OR of no quality), then I might delete it. If it’s only mildly against the rules and it isn’t really hurting anyone, I might just lock it - most content have an audience, even if it’s technically against the rules.
Sometimes I even leave a post intact with the only mod action that I pin a comment saying something along the lines of “Technically against the rules, but it gets to stay because of (insert reason)”
Let me guess, it was on [email protected]?
Yes
During the US Presidential election: Yes
Now? Not at all.
IMO, they thought they were helping keep the narrative about Kamala positive (and before her, they censored criticism of a man so clearly demented and being shoved down people’s throats that it was laughable) but in reality they were just enraging their allies, making them into lifelong enemies. You can never come back from giving up your integrity and dignity to genocidal corporatist demagogues no matter how bad Trump is.
