The more beloved or prominently known ones are being encapsulated in boxes to preserve them but most will just wear away. The boxes aren’t pretty either. For example, The Maiden Stone normally, and boxed. An example of the wear on the western face.

Nope. A rare few have perspex boxes that you can see through but most are just a wooden box. It’s removed in summer to allow people to see them.
