“They’re our brothers and sisters. When we stop seeing people that way it’s so easy to start making laws or enacting policies that harm them.”
Jesus had nothing to say about gay people. He had an awful lot to say about hypocrisy of religious leaders.
“B-but the old testament said…”
That retort gets so fucking old. At the same time as many fundies talk about how Jesus ushered in a new era of laws, they cling on to the bullshit written by randos hundreds of thousands or years earlier.
These are the same books that shout about how eating shellfish and mixing fabrics are affronts to God. The same ones that herald how virtuous a guy is because he was going to murder his own kid because of a talking bush. The same ones that go into graphic detail about donkey emissions. And yet certain snippets are still relevant in the midsts of all that dross? Give me a break!
And before any Christians respond, know that I (and others) don’t care. You can obsess over the old testament all you like. If you find value in their writings then good for you. But don’t force that discriminatory, hateful crap on other people.
Edit: fixed a typo.
I was raised the new covenant of the new testament overrides the old covenant of the old testament, the whole idea of Jesus saves doesn’t work otherwise. I don’t understand it, I was taught the old testament was basically context and prophecy.
There’s a lot of Christian fundies who say that, but then drag out the old testament when convenient. Almost like they’re picking and choosing what to believe.
‘Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.’ Jesus F. Christ
You were raised in blasphemy then.
So burn me at the stake then, I don’t really care. His fulfilment of the law was as the sacrificial lamb for all of humanity who choose to accept it.
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” - John 1:29
Arguing about Christianity on fucking Lemmy, what a day. I always thought it would be advocating for love thy neighbor that would get me called a blasphemer but nope, it’s the most basic of basic Christianity.
Yeah that’s why Christian’s don’t do animal sacrifices, but the Ten Commandments are still valid, are they not? So is the rest of god’s magic book, a book that ‘Christians’ tend to not follow when they don’t feel like it. Not a Christian btw, just pointing out the hypocrisy of saying you have the word of god written and the don’t even RTFM.
While the strongest Biblical criticisms of homosexuality are in the Old Testament, such criticism is also not exclusive to the Old Testament.
e.g. the Book of Romans is part of the New Testament:
Romans 1:26-27:
Who decided that Paul was a worthy prophet though? Who chose the books? The only reason for revelations was that they didn’t like the apocalypse of Peter. I would recommend most things with a grain of salt, but more for anything outside of the Gospel, and yes, it should still have some salt.
Something about switches and money lenders springs to mind.
